Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Personal Status Boards (PSB™s)
- What is a Personal Status Board (PSB™)?
It's a web-based status board. With a PSB™, you're able to monitor all your friends' or co-workers' statuses at once.
There are actually six types of PSB™s: The first is the only free type of PSB™ and we refer to it as an MC PSB™, where there is implied trust in a close group so that everyone can share one password and user name and anyone can change anyone's status or comment—a must for childcare situations where there are caregivers updating statuses of children too young to do it themselves. The MC (Microcommunity) PSB™, also known as the Standard version, has no front end.
The Pro version has a front end for administrator hosts to use for all editing of membership or user data. It's a complete application, as are the Social and Business PSB™s. A front end refers to the administrator webpage which has a menu that serves as an easy way for administrators to edit usernames, passwords, emails, status code meanings, administrator data, and add or delete users, etc. All PSB™s except the Standard version have this front end.
The Pro version is the only other MC-type PSB™ beside the Standard version and this means there is implied trust in a close group so that everyone can share one password and user name and anyone can change anyone's status or comment. With Social and Business PSB™s, users can change their own statuses and comments only, but no one else's. - Why would I want one?
To be able to monitor all your friends' or co-workers' statuses at once—this cannot be done with any other social networking method.
There are 100 customizable status codes in which general feelings, needs, wants, desires, opinions, ideas, and availability can be expressed to the group, and coordination of activities can be greatly facilitated due to the fact that any group members can consult it (keeping it open as a window on their computer screens) and instantly learn what everyone else is into. Additionally, statuses get extra elaboration via use of the comment field, so the exact status or idea gets communicated.
This is a new level of social connectedness, empowering new levels of social awareness, social effectiveness and social efficiency with the social or MC PSB™s, or with the business PSB™s, business effectiveness and business efficiency. - How much do they cost?
It costs $49.99 for the PSB™ Pro, the Business PSB™, and the Social PSB™, and $59.99 for the Business PSB™ Plus and the Social PSB™ Plus, and the Standard (MC) PSB™ is free. See chart for feature and price comparisons.
- Do I need to know programming to install or use it?
Not at all. The users need only to know how to read and click a mouse, while the administrator who installs it merely needs to have a website and know how to access the control panel, and have the login info to do so. There are free hosting sites: Here are 118 free web page hosting sites that offer free MySQL databases to use on their web servers.
- What are the features of Personal Status Boards (PSB™s)?
They display name, status, comment, and status code meaning for all users of one PSB™. A chart of all 100 status codes and their meanings is also displayed. There's a button next to each name that can be clicked by that person to update his/her status code and optional comment.
If users leave the PSB™ window open, they can check all users' statuses and comments as often as they like. Each time users check out the PSB™, they see what people WERE into, and then when they hit Refresh (F5), the screen refreshes and they see what users ARE into (i.e., their last entry). This procedure gives a fuller picture of users' statuses than a board that automatically updates—which causes viewers to forget what users WERE into so it's less informative.
All PSB™s except the Standard version have a front end so administrators can use convenient menus to edit user/member info. - What are the system requirements?
Any computers that are connected to the Internet can use PSB™s. And ALL types of PSB™s require a host (your website's host) to host the PSB™ files, as well as access to the control panel—usually cPanel X. And make sure your host server has a MySQL database for you to use—most plans have this. Ask if you're not sure. There needs to be PHP 5.2 or higher on the server, which most have. And make sure the host hasn't disabled the JavaScript Object Notation—JSON—extension to PHP V5.2. It is enabled by default so he'd have to go out of his way to disable it, which hosts seldom do.
- Is there any way to get one free?
Yes. The Standard PSB™ is ALWAYS free. There's even a way to get the PSB™ Pro free—see how here: Pro version.
- How many users can a PSB™ support?
The PSB™s with front ends (all PSB™s except the Standard version) support unlimited users, unlimited number of PSB™s, unlimited members. (Each member is the administrator of one PSB™—which may have as many users as desired.) Standard PSB™s can support unlimited PSB™s and users as well, but this would get unwieldy without a front end.
Any legal, legitimate group that is not about violence or hate or crime or treason or porn may use our PSB™ software. The only stipulation that limits ALL of the PSB™s is that all PSB™ MySQL tables (including all the PSB™ tables and administrator members tables and status code meaning tables) must be in the same MySQL database. This is hardly a restriction since there's no limit to the size of MySQL databases or the number of tables they contain except for the available room on the server. - How many administrators can a PSB™ system support?
Unlimited, as discussed above. To clarify the way all this is set up, see this PSB™ hosting diagram.
- How many PSB™s can a PSB™ system support support?
Unlimited, as discussed above.
- What does the Plus mean in the Business PSB™ Plus and the Social PSB™ Plus?
It means that the PSB™s have the Email feature. This feature turns all the names on the PSB™ display page into convenient links to that person's email address. Clicking them opens their email program so you can email them.
- What does the Pro mean in the PSB™ Pro?
It means it's like the Standard PSB™ except it has a full front end with administrator menus, etc. And it has a utility to allow users of the Standard version to update their Standard PSB™ MySQL tables to the PSB™ Pro version MySQL tables.
The Pro version is the only other MC-type PSB™ beside the Standard version and this means there is implied trust in a close group so that everyone can share one password and user name and anyone can change anyone's status or comment. With Social and Business PSB™s, users can change their own statuses and comments only, but no one else's.
